Second Appendix: the practical method of getting rid of illness and extending life
If you aren't focused on self cultivation but just want to improve your health and live longer, you can use this method to protect yourself.
In the early hours of morning when only a little light has come up, sit still for two hours, then wash your face, eat, and get about your daily activities. In the night you can sit between the bottom fourth of Hai to top fourth of Zi, then go to sleep. Every morning and evening you will sit for a total of four hours. You don't have to add any extra time, but the key point is you must be consistent and do this every day without breaking the habit, then it won't get in the way of your daily activities.
Translation: Mr.Chen uses increments of Ke to explain the time. One day and night have a total of 100 Ke time increments, one hour has four of them. At nighttime the time of Hai in the last fourth Ke is between 10-11 PM. The upper fourth Ke of the Zi time is 11-12 PM. These two times together are two hours in modern time.

During the Winter nights are long and the days are short, in the morning it is best to rise before the sun comes up, and sit until it rises. When your mind is nervous and you don't have the patience to sit, you can get up after just half an hour. Over time you can gradually build up your stamina to sit for a full hour, then eventually one and a half hours, and ultimately for two hours. After that you don't have to add any extra time.
Explanation: this means that when you sit it is OK to just start with half an hour and stop, just follow your own situation when you decide how long to sit. Normally every time you sit in meditation you should do it for at least half an hour.
When you sit in meditation you don't need to contain the orifice, or move Qi, or stop the thoughts, or return the light and reverse the illumination, or visualize the Dantian, or put the tongue to the roof of the mouth, closing the two hands, or use the eyes to observe the nose and use the nose to observe the heart, or any other different things. Just sit upright, don't move and don't rock, and just imagine you are still and stable like a figurine of a Boddhisatva, that is enough. The two legs can be crossed or drape, the eyes can be open or closed, all of these things just follow your preference. The two hands can be at your center, or at your sides, this is even less important. Only the clothing of the body must not be too tight, you should loosen your belt, and let down your hair, sit comfortably and make yourself soft and later you will become rich in flexibility. Do not make the body have even the slightest impediment to comfort. You must keep your meditation area clean and get rid of all bugs. Sitting for a long time and forgetting yourself entirely is best.
Explanation: this part is about the method of meditation, you don't have to use any technique, just do what you find easy. However, in the long run it is best if you completely forget yourself when you meditate.
